Visit the exhibition of Antoni Tàpies: A Political Biography
This season, the Fundació Antoni Tàpies is the protagonist of an exceptional exhibition. From June 2 of this 2018 until February 24, 2019, its exposes “Antoni Tàpies. Political Biography “,where he explores that in addition to being a modern artist (he was a painter, sculptor and theoretician of Spanish art, considered one of the most outstanding Spanish artists of the 20th century), he also represents in his work the difficulties of a life under Franco’s regime and the urgent need to manifest a political position.
During those hard years Tàpies showed his political positioning in an environment marked by prohibition, repression and punishment. His political biography is focused on a specific period of time, from 1946 to 1977. It is a journey from the postwar period and the dictatorship of the Franco regime to the Spanish democratic transition. At the end of the Franco regime, he became an icon of political commitment.
Then, he wrote:
…“I now understood that, all told, the condition as a solitary bird, as an independent rebel that artists need to assume at times painfully, may also lie at the center of the freedom and hope that inspire so many ideas that turn to militancy.”(Tàpies, Antoni).
His work is especially focused on Catalonia between 1966 and 1977, when there was a process of citizen mobilization against the regime of General Franco. Tàpies’ work invites the art spectator find a place where he becomes a citizen willing to convert a fascination for aesthetics into a political motivation.
