The poetic look of Cualladó
In addition to the piece of art that is in itself, and of the visits can be done by its interior and by its roof, La Pedrera -the Casa Milà- also hosts temporary exhibitions dedicated to artists of different disciplines. Painters, sculptors, photographers or designers have in the Gaudí building the best possible stage.
At this moment, and until June 30, the exhibition Cualladó esencial, dedicated to the work of photographer Gabriel Cualladó, can be seen in La Pedrera through a selection of 140 photographs. It is the first individual exhibition in Barcelona of the legacy of this creator who died in 2003.
Born in 1925, Gabriel Cualladó is considered one of the most outstanding representatives of the movement of the renovation of Spanish photography of the second half of the 20th century. Among the most outstanding features of his work is the humanist and poetry-laden look with which he portrayed the gray reality of post-war Spanish society. Far from the great events, Cualladó focused on the intimate and close details of everyday life, through photographs of his friends, family and anonymous people. His most prolific years were those comprised in the decades of the fifties, sixties and seventies, in which he signed photographic series set in Madrid, Paris and Asturias.
Cualladó had a totally self-taught formation and always considered himself as an amateur. He was also a great collector of photography, and among his many recognitions he was the first winner of the Premio Nacional de Fotografía and Gold Medal of the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid.
The exhibition, organized by Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera, continues the line taken on previous occasions to claim the work of great photographers of the second half of the 20th century, as it did with Colita (2014), Leopoldo Pomés (2015), Toni Catany ( 2016) and Xavier Miserachs (2018).
