Ramon Casas and the Casas-Carbó residence
Painter, draftsman and designer, Ramon Casas was one of the most emblematic artists of Catalan Modernism; he was also a member of the wealthy class and, like many representatives of Barcelona’s upper bourgeoisie, he also wanted to demonstrate his opulence by building a house on Passeig de Gràcia. The architect Antoni Rovira i Rabassa -son of the also architect Antoni Rovira i Trias- was in charge of designing the building.
Designed in 1898, the Casas-Carbó residence -which is located at number 96 of the promenade- is a modernist building with a ground floor and four floors, and the artist had his workshop on the ground floor, while the rest of the floors there were houses. In this building also lived a famous friend of Ramon Casas and also an important name of Modernism, the painter and writer Santiago Rusiñol.
The Casas-Carbó residence has a carved stone façade that shows careful sculptural work, and grandstands on the main floor. Also noteworthy are the ornaments on the balconies and the impressive wooden and wrought iron door. In the noble plant part of the original decoration is preserved, with ceramic and wrought iron elements, and a luxurious fireplace sculpted by the decorator Josep Pascó. From this floor there is access to a spectacular interior patio from which the rear facade of La Pedrera can be seen.
For many years, the Casas-Carbó residence building hosted the famous Vinçon store, dedicated to furniture and design objects, and an emblem of Barcelona’s important role in design.
