In addition to the world-known Dalí, Gaudí and Miró, Catalonia has gifted the world with other world-class artists such as Antoni Tàpies, considered to be one of the most outstanding Spanish artists of the 20th century. This painter and sculptor, born in Barcelona, created a foundation in his birth city that bears his name and focuses on the study and promotion of contemporary art: Fundació Tàpies. Located at Aragó Street, between the Passeig de Gràcia and the Rambla de Catalunya, this iconic place will welcome the coming autumn with a succulent programming for lovers of contemporary art.

Until October 13th, the Fundació will be exhibiting I will make up a song and sing it in a theatre with night air above my head, a project by British photographer Hannah Collins.

Born in London in 1956, Collins is considered to be one of the most unique photographers in the international landscape, and is known for the documentary dimension of her photographs, which are often presented in large formats or in sequences that contain several images in one same place. The project presented by Fundació Antoni Tàpies focuses on the figure of Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy (1900-1989) by means of photographs mounted as a sequence and screened as a film, or presented in large formats. Through photography, Fathy’s buildings are redeemed from the decadence and ruin that threatens them.

Antoni Tàpies. Teatro will be inaugurated in October and focuses on the artist’s scenography projects for theatres. Between 1961 and 1989 Tàpies created five scenographies that share with the rest of his works the fact that they neither reference any spatial situation nor allude the presence of characters. Furthermore, in 1992 he participated in an opera project for the Liceu, which never premiered, and of which a script, sheet music and a few drawings remain. The Fundació will reminisce these projects using different materials – from sketches, photographs, program booklets and press articles to multimedia material and some scenography that has been preserved.

The Ariella Azoulay. Fe de errata exhibit, dedicated to Israeli photographer Ariella Azoulay, will also open in that same month.

Fundació Antoni Tàpies was created in 1984 by artist Antoni Tàpies to promote the study and knowledge of modern and contemporary art. With this objective, it opened its doors in 1990 at the building of the old Montaner y Simón publishing house, built by modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The Fundació aims to foster collaborations between specialists from different fields to contribute to a better understanding of contemporary art and culture.
