CENTENARY OF THE MAJESTIC HOTEL

One of the historic establishments of the Paseo de Gracia celebrates its anniversary. The Majestic Hotel celebrates its centenary as one of the best hotels in Barcelona and throughout Spain.

Over the course of these 100 years, the hotel has experienced endless histories, some as unknown as exciting, which have made it a living history of the city of Barcelona.

The origins

In 1918 Éccole Cacciami, an Italian entrepreneur living in Barcelona, ​​opened the Majestic Inglaterra Hotel on the Paseo de Gracia. The opening was partly thanks to the success of the hotel running until then, the Inglaterra Hotel located on Fontanella street, next to Plaza Catalunya.

A few years after its founding, Cacciami got rid of the hotel and acquired it by Martí Casals who wanted to expand the dependencies with the adjoining building. This extension, however, was not carried out until the 60s due to the civil war and the economic difficulties of the postwar period.

First time of splendor

The first years of the Majestic Hotel were of great splendor and quickly it became one of the city’s reference points for the celebration of events. Its location in one of the most aristocratic avenues of Barcelona, ​​was one of its great allies.

The Civil War

Thanks to its excellent location and the services it offered, the Hotel acquired an important role during the Civil War years. He became the propaganda office of the Generalitat de Catalunya and was the center of the main foreign correspondents who covered the war.

Rename

After the Civil War, the hotel changed its name to Majestic Inglaterra Hotel by the current Majestic Hotel nomenclature and the owners decided to expand and remodel the facilities in the late 1950s. This great extension did not end until the 70’s when the Majestic Hotel added a new building to the main main building, and could accommodate the more than 300 rooms it has today.

The great restyling

The Olympic Games of Barcelona in 1992, turns the county city into one of the world’s tourism referents and the hotel decides to make a great restyling that begins in 1994 and lasts more than 5 years for become one of the most luxurious hotels in the city.

The constant level of excellence of the facilities and hotel staff provides the highest hotel rating, 5 stars Great Luxury and, later, the entrance to the exclusive International Association “The Leading hotels of the world” , just over 400 establishments from 80 different countries.

Over the course of its 100 years, the Majestic Hotel has been chosen by many celebrities to rest and relax during their stay in Barcelona. Monarchs such as Queen Maria Cristina, artists such as Joan Miró, singers such as Josephine Baker or the soprano Renata Tebaldi and writers such as Federico García Lorca or Antonio Machado, the latter being the only one with a suite with his name in the hotel, are some of the illustrious characters that have gone through the hotel.
